Carnival fleet now has a hundred ships and generates more than $ 15 billion in annual revenue.

The world number one Carnival Cruise Lines, whose reputation has been marred by a series of failures and incidents, announced Tuesday that its CEO and main shareholder Micky Arison would lose some of its responsibilities.

Mr. Arison will retain the chairmanship of the Board of Directors (BOD),but will leave on July 3,the general manager,he had held for 34 years,Arnold Donald.

"I discussed this with the board for a while now and I feel it is the right time to align our business on existing best practices in terms of governance, " commented Mr. Arison in a statement.

Carnival said that when Mr. Arison became CEO in 1979,the group is not listed and generated sales of $ 44 million with just three boats. Its fleet has over a hundred ships and generates more than $ 15 billion in annual revenue.

However, this hyper-fast growth has led to an increase in incidents.

The most serious was the beginning of 2012 the sinking of the Costa Concordia, owned by its subsidiary Costa, who had died 32 off Italy.Several other ships have since suffered extensive damage, including a cruise in February of highly publicized in the Gulf of Mexico for 4000 passenger Carnival Triumph, following a fire in the engine room nightmare.

However, this did not prevent the group from returning to the green on the first half (ending late May) of its fiscal year 2012/13,the results were published Thursday in parallel: it posted a net profit of $ 78 million, against a loss of $ 125 million for the same period a year earlier, for a turnover down 0.7% to $ 7.1 billion.

Helpful advice

Carnival is the choice of most first time cruisers and sadly I have seen them turn off a lot of people to cruising. I am not saying don't give them a try but make sure to pick one of their newer ships, preferably out of Miami or FT. Lauderdale and DO NOT go on or near a school holiday. Although that rule goes for most cruise lines. I agree that Royal Caribbean is your best bet. I am in my mid 30's and have been on over 40 cruises with all of the big lines. ( I used to write cruise reviews and a cruise travel column). RCCL is not the most luxurious or glamorous but they are definitely the best value for your money and offer the most for your age demographic
